Under the supervision of Bradley Hyman M.D., PhD, in the Department of Neurology, the Lab Manager carries out neurodegeneration related research and acts as lab manager for daily operations of the Alzheimer Laboratories, including maintaining equipment, inventory, protocols, purchasing, animal protocols and related activities.

Supervises technical staff and visiting students. Participates in hiring of facility staff.Assesses and resolves technical problems in the laboratory as they arise.

Teaches lab skills and assists with onboarding of incoming lab personnel. Conducts experiments, performs routine and technically advanced assays as needed.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: May lead research projects and supports and carries out collaborative programs Supervises and oversees Alzheimer Research lab personnel.

Assists in interviewing and assessing potential candidates for laboratory technician positions and other staff as needed Oversee investigators and supervises technicians working in the lab Directs and supervises training of new employees and investigators in laboratory procedures. Directs technical activities of the main lab and or sub-sections of the lab. Supports junior investigators in the Alzheimer Unit Performs experiments with a high level of independence including, eg human brain dissection, tissue preparation, and histologic staining.

Contributes ideas and suggestions for improvements in experimental protocols and techniques. Participates in the development, validation and investigation of new procedures, assays, and/or instrumentation. Manages equipment repair problems for the lab.

Responsibilities include handling, monitoring and signing off equipment repairs. Writes and updates laboratory protocols and safety guidelines Record Keeping Responsibilities: Computerized network system requires knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other applications. Accurate record keeping is essential.

Teaches new employees how to use computerized records. Generates new databases for lab use. Manages several product databases for lab Executes protocols of non-routine experiments Assists investigators with determining the most suitable methodology Performs basic design and modification of protocols Calculates, transcribes and analyzes data Prepares and presents reports and updates, organizes and summaries acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques Organizes and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, or other documents for publication and/or presentation Participates in preparation of scientific reports Procurement of supplies, the scientific maintenance of the laboratory and the organization of research material Library research and database analysis, upkeep of written records of experimental procedures and data analysis Serve as lab Safety Officer controlling colleagues' potential risks and assuring lab meets Safety (both Fire and Biohazardous) required standards.

Receives specimens from specimen source and ensures proper identification including assigning a specimen number Perform corrective action and performance review with staff Work with grants manager and the PI for financial management of the lab Coordinate regulatory/compliance activities Contribute to the scientific literature/and potentially present at outside meetings/conferences SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises and oversees technical personnel (as many as 6) in the Alzheimer disease laboratories. This includes interviewing and hiring prospective candidates for technician positions.Coordinating outside vendors in repairing equipment.

Carries out and coordinates collaborative projects, pilot experiments and special projects Safety officer for the Unit.FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:Will be responsible for ordering lab supplies and reagents setting up template of fund distribution working with Dr Hyman and the Senior Grant Manager.WORKING CONDITIONS: Dr. Hyman's laboratory occupies space in Building 114's Alzheimer Disease Research Laboratory, a remodeled and refurbished wet laboratory space on the 2nd floor of the CNY 114 building in the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative disease (MIND).

The lab is fully equipped to prepare histologic specimens, perform biochemical analyses, cell culture, iPS work, and mouse studies.Environment: The MassGeneral Instititute for Neurodegeneration a center with 20 investigators studying Alzheimer, Parkinson, Huntington diseases and ALS. Core facilities include an animal care unit, a Bioinformatics/biostatistics unit, a neurodegenerative disease Brain Bank, advanced microscopy including multiphoton, confocal, and super-resolution microscopes, a laser capture microdissection facility, qPCR and array facilities, and common postdoctoral rooms, conference rooms, etc.

QualificationsSKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Experience in histological methods, microscopy, cell culture, and biochemical and/or molecular techniques. Ability to multi-task Analytical skills and ability to resolve technical problems Ability to interpret acceptability of data results Working knowledge of data management programs High degree of computer literacy Demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies Ability to translate, adapt and apply science Must be familiar with computers including elementary word processing and database management. Must be attentive to detail and precise in performing technical tasks.

Previous supervisory experience preferredEDUCATION: Bachelor of Science degree required, preferably in Microbiology, Animal Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology or other related discipline, with 5 years' experience.
